Portland Spring Chinook Preview

Willamette River Spring Chinook Salmon

Just a few days remain of winter before the calendar announces the beginning of spring. In the Portland area, that means it’s time to start chasing Springers! A bunch of early spring chinook have already been caught starting the end of February, with the bulk of the fish beginning to arrive in April. While the Columbia River is typically open for retention through the first week of April, the Springer season on the Willamette River usually runs through into June. We’re just getting started and there’s lots of fishing to be done in the next few months.

Portland Spring Chinook are known for being the tastiest of all of the salmon species, and they can put up some good fights in the near perfect water conditions of spring. What more could you ask for than some action in the boat and some delicious fillets for your grill? If you’re looking for a little variety in your day, we can add some catch and release sturgeon fishing into the mix. April and May provide some nice opportunities to wrangle these huge fish before they begin to head to Astoria in June in search of summer baitfish. Whether you’re young or old, an expert or a novice, spring fishing in Portland offers some memorable experiences.
