Columbia River Summer Steelhead Fishing

Beautiful Columbia River Steelhead fillets for the grill.

June and July are prime time for Columbia River Summer Steelhead fishing in the Portland/Vancouver area. Fish started showing up as usual at the end of May, and this past week we’ve seen a significant increase in steelhead moving through the system. To add to the catch, we also have a Sockeye Salmon season this year, which gives us even more opportunity.

Columbia River Salmon

Columbia River summer fishing for the past few years has included Chinook, Sockeye, and Steelhead opportunities. Steelhead are feisty and do all they can to avoid being brought into the boat. While not as big as Steelhead, Sockeye make for some great eating! And summer Chinook…need I say more? It’s always fun to fight salmon and steelhead on light gear. This year we’re only able to retain jack Chinook salmon during the summer season. For big time Chinook fishing, Buoy 10 is right around the corner and the Chinook fishing should be pretty incredible this year.

As water temperatures start to warm and water levels drop, the Steelhead should start making their way into the tributaries. After the 4th of July we usually have a catchable amount in the Lewis River and/or Cowlitz River. This is an action-packed fishery with lots of casting, side drifting with eggs, and running the river in a jet boat as we move between holes. There’s nothing better than your rod loading up and a bright chrome steelhead flying out of the water to start your morning!
