Puget Sound Lingcod Fishing Trips

Puget Sound lingcod, launching from Cornet Bay on Whidbey Island, WA, and fishing just inside the Deception Pass bridge. Retention size is 26″-36″, with the larger lingcod we can keep being around 25 lbs. We have to release the oversized fish, but they just add to the excitement of the day. The biggest lingcod we’ve caught was 53″ and 70 lbs! These fish know how to fight and we’ve had some epic days in the sound. We’ll be running trips in May and the first half of June.

A Typical Day

We start the day going after bait fish – herring and kelp greenling. We usually spend 1-2 hrs gathering enough bait for our adventure. Then we head to the lingcod grounds where we will hook up live bait, lower them near the bottom and free drift with the current. We will be in Marine Area 7, bouncing around the islands to several hot spots our experienced guide has found over the years.

Once we get a lingcod limit we will continue to explore around the islands and fish for more bottom fish, like greenling, until the end of the day. FYI – kelp greenling make great fish tacos. Then we head back to the dock where we’ll process and bag your catch.

Location

We’re only about 15 minutes from Anacortes, and 30 min from both Mount Vernon and Burlington, Washington. There are lots of options for hotels and dining there. Seattle is only about 1.5 to 2 hours away. It’s a beautiful location for some action-packed fishing. Check out Deception Pass State Park while you’re in the area.

FAQ’s about Puget Sound Lingcod Fishing

How much do guided fishing trips cost?

We have a variety of fishing trip options to choose from and we personally book each trip so we can answer questions and help you find just the right trip. Our pricing depends on whether you prefer a shared or private trip.

How much does a fishing license cost? Do we need tags as well?

You’ll need to purchase a Washington fishing license. Washington day licenses and annual licenses work great. No catch record cards are required. Licenses can be purchased online or at a local retailer. We’ll include all of the details regarding licenses in your trip confirmation email and you can also learn about what you’ll need on our Fishing Licenses page.

What safety gear do you have?

We take your safety very seriously. We carry Type I life jackets onboard and have adults wear lightweight, auto-inflatable personal flotation devices (PFDs) to make sure you’re comfortable and safe.

Do you provide the fishing gear, tackle, and bait?

Yes, we do! Everything you need to fish, from top-notch rods and reels to tackle and bait, is provided for you to use during your guided fishing trip with us. The right gear can make a huge difference in your trip. We’ll even clean and filet your catch at the end of your trip!

What should we pack for a day of fishing in the Puget Sound?

To stay comfortable on the water, we recommend dressing in layers and bringing rain gear. Please bring the following items:

  • Layered Clothing: Even on warm days, morning winds can be chilly.

  • Rain Gear: Waterproof jacket and pants if rain is in the forecast.

  • Valid Fishing License: A Washington license. See details on our fishing license page.

  • Food & Drinks: Whatever you would like to eat or drink for the duration of the trip.

  • Sun Protection: Sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen.

All of the details will be in your trip confirmation email, which we’ll send out once you book your trip.

Can kids fish for lingcod?

Certainly! Fishing is a sport enjoyed by all ages, and the more the merrier. Kids can be quick to pick up on the motion of fishing, and by the end of your trip the kids may be teaching you a thing or two. Lingcod fishing in the Puget Sound is pretty hands-on, which keeps kids occupied and having fun. Families are always welcome onboard our boats. A guided fishing trip allows you to simply enjoy the day with your kids or grandkids, while leaving all of the details to us. Just let us know how old your kids are and we’ll show you the best options available.

We will be flying home. How do we get our fish home?

We get this question a lot. Enough to make a page to give you all sorts of information about how to get your fish home with the airlines.

We’re from out of town. Where should we stay when lingcod fishing?

When it comes to lodging in NW Washington, there are a variety of options to choose from, whether you prefer the larger chains, the smaller boutique hotels, or Airbnb. Some people love the hustle and bustle of being in town while others prefer to stay in quieter areas. Anacortes, Mount Vernon and Burlington are just a short drive from the launch location. Snohomish County has a lot to offer! If you don’t know the area and you’re trying to build your travel plan, feel free to ask questions. We’re always happy to help you create the best experience possible and part of that is lodging. No matter where you choose to stay, a short drive will get you to your launch location the morning of your trip.
