Portland Area Salmon: City Limit Fall Salmon

It is hard to believe, but there are only three more days of fishing left at Buoy 10. The small tides started several days ago, and fishing went from excellent in the ocean to excellent in the river, with just a couple day slower gap in between. The good news is that once Astoria closes, it’s not the end of the world. That push of Chinook salmon will still be there making their next move upstream. We will be there to, moving with them! Here at Lance Fisher Fishing we try to keep you up to date on the fishing in the Pacific Northwest with a fresh take on popular upcoming fisheries! For us, Portland area salmon covers the area between Rainier, Oregon and Bonneville Dam: basically fisheries that are within an hour or just a tad over from Portland. Popular spots are Rainier, St. Helens, the I-5 area, and below Bonneville Dam. Our trips tend to move, as pushes of fish move up the river stop and hold, making one spot hot for a few days before those fish move on, and we run back down to Rainier to find the next push.

Due to run timing this year, I would expect mostly fall Chinook in the fishery, but given that we are already consistently catching coho in Astoria, it would not surprise me at all if we saw some coho caught down by Rainier right after Buoy 10 closes on the 24th. All of these spots are conveniently close, typically have nice weather, and are typically very productive. This fishery can be a crowded one, but for good reason. A wise man once told me “lots of people don’t show up for no fish.” Whether I believe it or not, I would say it shoots pretty straight when it comes to this fishery.

We will start this fishery the day after buoy 10 closes on August 24th. If you want to get in on the action, be flexible. Gathering current information from other guides helps us determine the best chance for you to get into some quality Chinook. Your guide will let you know as soon as he knows which location you will be meeting at.
