The best sturgeon fishing of the year on the Columbia River happens in the Astoria Estuary. Sturgeon converge on the area from June through September to gorge themselves on the bait fish that invade the estuary during the summer. The season to keep sturgeon is usually from the end of May into early June. After the closure, incredible catch and release fishing can be had well into September. All the fish with none of the fishing pressure equals a lot of fun.
Summer is here and that means it’s time for some incredible catch and release sturgeon fishing on the Columbia River out of Astoria. Spend your day wrangling monster fish in shallow water. These trips are customer favorites as the action just keeps going. It’s not unusual to have a double or triple on during the trip.
The Astoria Estuary certainly holds incredible numbers of sturgeon, but the main reason I love to guide trips for these fish is because the shallow water action provides my customers an incredible experience. We will regularly catch fish in 3-6 feet of water on light tackle. Now that’s fun!
