The best sturgeon fishing of the year on the Columbia River happens in the Astoria Estuary. Sturgeon converge on the area from June, July and August to gorge themselves on the bait fish that invade the estuary during the summer. This is a catch and release fishery that might offer some of the fishing anywhere. Big numbers of fish are common, with big fish being just as common. Average fish go between 30-60 pounds, with many in excess of 100 pounds.
To handle these fish, I offer my customers gear rarely found on any other charter/guide boat in the area. All rods are Shimano Terez Medium weight rods. Reels are Shimano Tallica 10, 2 speed reels that keep the setup very light and super powerful.
The Astoria area of the Columbia River Estuary certainly holds incredible numbers of sturgeon, but the main reason I love to guide for these fish is because of the shallow water action my customers are able to experience. We will regularly catch fish in 3-6 feet of water on light tackle. Sturgeon will regularly come out of the water and fish will often pull 350 feet of line out of the reel. Now that’s fun!
